From the earliest stage of the product development to the stage of the final product, a PO is a role for people who can adapt quickly, communicate smoothly and prioritise accordingly.

While the Product Owner is accountable for each stage of the development process, people with this position play a main role in evaluating and monitoring the progress of the project as well as in ensuring the project’s success.

Participation in Planning

The PO is heavily involved in the main planning activities at each level of the product development. The PO is responsible for updating the team backlog and usually also takes part in the program vision and content presentations.

Having a Product Owner who makes sure that the team is always on track despite the fast-paced and often very flexible nature of the product development process is key. Each team member needs to be on the same page, and here comes the PO - he/she can create a product roadmap that outlines the strategic direction of the given product over a period of time.

Managing the backlog

As already mentioned, the PO is responsible for managing the backlog of the product. The backlog  works like a to-do list for the project, where the most important items are always listed at the top, so that the team is aware of what needs to be delivered first. Prioritizing objectives in a dynamic environment is crucial. That is why, the Product Owner must ensure the best optimisation for a smooth product development process while still keeping in mind the ever-evolving project needs.

Being a primary point of contact

Communication skills are much needed here, as the PO is the primary link between stakeholders and the team.
